100Cr6 / 102Cr6 - description and application

100Cr6 material, is a construction steel of spheroidal bearing steel grades which exhibits high hardness, abrasion resistance and relatively easy mechanical treatment. 100Cr6 is used for the production of bearings and other pressure and friction-resistant components that do not operate at elevated temperatures, and the dimensions used are limited to approximately 30mm of thickness.

It should also be mentioned that 100Cr6 and the more common equivalent of 100Cr6 have a limited tendency to deformation, medium hardening capacity, and at operating temperatures up to 150 ℃ during friction the product may be tempered.

Steel is used for the production of rings, ball bearings, rollers, roller bearings or discs in the form of hot-rolled tubes, round bars, thin and thick sheets, forgings, wires or wire rods. The equivalent of the 100Cr6 steel is the 102Cr6 tool steel, which in turn is the 102Cr6 material.

102Cr6 as a differently graded flat or round grade is used for the manufacture of cold forming dies and stamps, file cutters, wood and paper cutting knives, taps, scrapers, or broaches.

Mechanical properties of 100Cr6 steel

  • Tensile strength after spheroidizing annealing - Rm = 570 - 720 MPa
  • Tensile strength after thermal treatment - Rm = 590 - 780 MPa
  • Linear Expansion Factor - a20-100℃= 12,0 ⋅ 10-6 K-1
  • Hardness in annealed condition with a limited hardness < 235 HB
  • Hardness in spheroidized annealing condition 170 - 210 HB
  • Hardness in the heat-hardened state 170 - 230 HB
  • Hardness in heat-treated state > 675 HB

Heat treatment of 100Cr6, 1.3505 and 102Cr6, 1.2067 steel:

  • Softening annealing at 780 - 810 ℃ with furnace cooling to 550 - 600 ℃ at 10-20 ℃ hourly with subsequent air or isothermal cooling at 680 - 720 ℃
  • Tempering at 830 - 870 ℃ with cooling in oil or water at 820 - 850 ℃
  • Tempering at 150 - 170 ℃ in the air
