1.2842, 90MnCrV8, AISI O2 - specification and application

Tool steel for cold working with high hardenability, high hardness, abrasion resistance and high cutting edge sharpness. The grade is not susceptible to deformation during heat treatment, shows high regularity of dimensional changes and high durability of the knife. It does not tolerate excessive heating well, which is associated with low resistance to tempering. Steel is used in the production of precision tools and measuring plates, punching dies, wood cutters, draughts, hand reamers, cutting plates and disc knives, paper, tobacco and leather cutting blades, thread cutting jaws, spindles, gauges, micrometer screws, and moulds for the extrusion of plastic parts.

  • Hardness in softening annealed condition: <229HB
  • Hardness after hardening: >61 HRC
  • Hardness after hardening and tempering at temperature
    • 200C = >61.0 HRC
    • 250C = 60.4 HRC
    • 300C = 58.3 HRC
    • 350C = 56.0 HRC
    • 400C = 53.0 HRC
    • 500C = 47.0 HRC
    • 550C = 44.0 HRC
  • Linear expansion coefficient: 11,7 * 10-6 K-1
  • Thermal conductivity: 25 W*m*K

Heat treatment - processes and temperatures:

  • Softening annealing at a temperature of 680-700°C
  • Slow cooling relief annealing at 600-680°C
  • Hardening in oil at 780-800°C
  • Tempering in air at temperature of 200-280°C
