12Ch1, 145Cr6, 1.2063 – description
Steel grades of this type have good mechanical properties and remain relatively unchanged during quenching. Therefore can be used to produce precise and durable tools. Such tools can't operate at elevated temperature, and their thickness should not exceed 15mm.
Main features:
- High hardness level
- Grinding resistant
- Medium hardening capacity
Applications
This alloy is widely used for:
- Cold saws
- Punching dies
- Milling cutters
- Screw taps
- Reamers
- Gauges
- Die nuts
Physical and mechanical properties
Hardness is one of the most important parameter of this steel.
Norm | Grade | Max HB hardness as soft annealed | Max HB hardness as quenched |

Heat treatment and hot forming
Following parameters are recommended for working and heat treatment
Heat treatment and forging | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Process | Temperature [℃] | |||
NC6 | 19422 | 145Cr6 | 12Ch1 | |
Forging | 1000-800℃ | 1050-850℃ | 1050-850℃ | - |
Soft annealing | 770-790℃ | 700-730℃ | 760-790℃ | - |
Quenching | 800-830℃ | 830-870℃ | 830-860℃ | 850-870℃ |
Tempering | 150-260℃ | 100-300℃ | 100-300℃ | - |
Hardening in oil brings best results.
The final tool hardness depends on the tempering temperature. Let's see this relation for the grade marked as 145CrV6:
- After tempering at 100 ℃, the hardness is 64 HRC
- After tempering at 200 ℃, the hardness is 61 HRC
- After tempering at 300 ℃, the hardness is 57 HRC
Before forging heat up thoroughly and slowly. After forging, soft annealing and stress annealing cool slowly in sand or ash
Welding
Cold-working tool steel grades are hardly weldable, so welding should be considered only in case of failure of a tool. Note that weld has slightly different parameters, so be carefull with heat treatment. Those rules apply also to surfacing by welding.
